Artists today work with their sketchbooks in many different ways. Some use their sketchbooks in basic courses to record ideas in the field. Others use them as art journals for finished work, using a variety of wet and dry media. Stillman & Birn meets this wide range of artist needs with notebooks that contain robust, high-performance art documents.
Only Stillman & Birn offers a sketchbook system that gives artists the choice of paper weight, shade, and surface type that best suits their specific techniques. With both inner and surface gauges, our papers have exceptional wet strength that withstands multiple wash application. Similarly, just as paper sizing retards water absorption, the pigment remains on the surface of the sheet. The result: an incredibly bright color!
Stillman & Birn bindings are just as strong. Our rigid bindings, rigid when new, are designed to be broken. The spines loosen and then lay completely flat, accommodating both two-page and flat-scan layouts.
Bound in the USA, our sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces: Medium Grain - distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes.
Cold Press - Substantial tooth, increased wetting and tear resistance, suitable for mixed media artwork.
Smooth - Suitable for pen and ink, colored pencils, water-based markers and watercolours.
There are six series in the Stillman & Birn sketch program:
Alpha Series Heavyweight: 150gsm Shade: White. Surface: medium grain. Media: dry media, light wash, ink.
Beta Extra Heavy Series: 270 g/m2. Shade: White. Surface: cold press. Media: dry and wet media, watercolor, ink.
Gamma Series Heavyweight: 150 gsm Shade: Ivory. Surface: medium grain. Media: dry media, light wash, ink.
Delta series Extra Heavy: 270 g / m2 Shade: Ivory. Surface: cold press. Media: dry and wet media, watercolor, ink.
Epsilon series Heavyweight: 150 gsm Shade: White. Surface: smooth. Media: Pen & Ink, Dry Media, Light Wash.
Zeta series Extra Heavyweight: 270g/m2. Shade: white. Surface: smooth. Media: dry and wet media, watercolor, ink
