POURING

The pouring technique, also known as fluid art, involves pouring acrylic paint to create an abstract painting. Pouring is a fun painting technique that allows you to create unique and inimitable pieces without the need to use the traditional brush, and it can be done at any age. The magic of this technique lies in the randomness of the resulting drawing, which can be created with liquid paint mixed together. Before starting, it is important to protect the work area well, since it is a technique that can get quite dirty, since we will be pouring liquids. Due to its multiple techniques, it is a way of experimenting with materials and colours. On the one hand, a so-called coated pour can be made for a result with intense and opaque colors. And, on the other hand, if you are looking for something more similar to watercolor, the technique is called pouring wash.
The most important thing is to take into account the materials with which the fluid acrylic technique is carried out: fluid acrylic paint. This paint has a lighter consistency than the rest and therefore makes it easier to pour, we recommend the Golden brand acrylic paints. If you do not have fluid acrylic, you can start by using normal acrylic paint diluted with water (but this has some disadvantages. Depending on the result you are looking for, you may have to add another product to the acrylic paint such as water or some medium. Add water : As we have already said, to increase the fluidity of the paint you can add water to the acrylic. For a coated pour it is enough to add one part of water for every ten of paint. On the other hand, for a wash pour, the amount of water should be greater but without going over, a maximum of one part of water for each part of paint. If there is too much water, the paint will not adhere correctly. Mediums: The mediums used for this technique are called Pouring Medium or Smoothing Medium and can be found with thick consistency and normal consistency, and now also with a matte and glossy finish.
How to perform the Pouring technique? As we have already said, there are several ways to make fluid acrylic, you just have to let creativity, and paint, flow! Direct Pouring: This direct pouring technique involves applying paint directly onto the canvas, creating puddles of paint and moving the surface back and forth, up and down, to completely cover it. Dirty Pour: The dirty pour technique is based on the use of a plastic cup to pour the colors onto the canvas. It consists of mixing the colors little by little inside the glass. Once the layers are placed you must pour the content on the canvas. This pouring can be done in several ways, the most common are: pouring directly from the glass. Place the canvas on the filled glass and turn it over. When it is upside down you just have to lift the glass little by little. For this technique it is important that the acrylic is not too liquid, otherwise the colors will mix inside the glass and the result will be a dirty color without different shades. The Pouring Medium acts as a diluting agent and a binder. Mediums give us a smoother flow and help mixed color paints to work more evenly. The pouring technique is not only applied to canvases, but the possibilities are endless. Pouring can be applied to any type of surface, creativity without limits! Had it ever occurred to you before to decorate a piece of furniture with the pouring technique and chalky paint?
