A pencil is a writing or drawing instrument. It consists of a lead or stick of pigment (usually graphite and a special grease or clay, but can also be a colored charcoal pigment) and usually encapsulated in a thin wooden cylinder. Modern pencils are manufactured industrially by mixing ground graphite powder and clay into a fine powder, adding water, and forming long leads that are fired in a kiln (thermally insulated compartments). The resulting leads are immersed in molten oil or wax, which seeps into tiny holes in the material, resulting in smoother writing. A plank of juniper or frankincense cedar with several long parallel grooves is cut to form a batten, and strips of graphite and clay are inserted into the grooves. Another ribbed panel is glued on top, so they fit together. Finally, everything is cut into individual pencils, which are then varnished or painted.
Many pencils in the world, and almost all in Europe, are classified with the European system that uses a continuous graduation described by H (for the hardness, from English Hard = hard) and B (for the degree of darkness; from English Black = black), as well as F (for the degree of fineness, from the English Fine = fine). The standard pencil for writing is the HB.
